Nothing is so plentiful as unasked-for advice.

It’s always easy to find loves but difficult to find a companion.

Need for frequent diversion means we’re bored with ourselves. How few sit quietly, doing nothing.

How we search for security and something permanent in a world that offers neither security nor permanence.

We believe what we want to believe, and we doubt our own experience.

Man is sure he is the center of everything, made in God’s image, when, in truth, there are uncountable billions of universes with unthinkable forms of life (manifestations of the one essence-energy). Churches perpetuate this egotism.

Everyone wants something for nothing, but everything will be paid for in full.

Humility that is the result of conscious effort is egotism. Constant concern with self and failure to accept impermanence are the causes of suffering.

Very few can speak in the abstract, or from an overall view; it must always be flavored by what is painful to me and what is pleasurable When you find one who can observe impersonally, you have met a wise creature.

Man has long been slave to the automobile and the telephone. Now he is becoming slave to the computer. Suppose all electric power plants failed (or were bombed out of existence).

To look down on another man or culture is to insult God.

Everyone knows he can’t take it with him; yet he accumulates eagerly until his death. One man told me he retired 30 years ago with one million dollars and still has the million. “How much good have you done with that money?” I asked.

One time I opened a lecture by saying: “You’re all dying!” You’d think I had thrown a bomb in the room. Another time, to young people, I declared: “You’ve all been conned since you were born — by your parents, your school, your church, and, finally, by advertisers.” The young people smiled and gladly accepted me, knowing I was not there to exploit them.
